Questions Regarding Item 21 on May 17, 2016 City Council Agenda
The following memorandum has been prepared to answer questions received from a community
member regarding Item 16 on the May 17, 2016, City Council Agenda.
How many renters refused inspectors entrance?
Answer: We have received emails or phone calls from property owners saying that their tenants
have refused to allow the inspections on 7 units. At this time approximately 90 units are
scheduled for inspection.
How many warrants were requested? How many warrants were granted?
Answer: No warrants have been requested.
How many landlords filled out the exemption form?
Answer: There have been 714 exemption forms submitted by property owners that indicate that
these properties were not rentals (primary residence, second homes or units no longer rented).
Stating, "no longer renting out this property."
Answer: This specific information has not been tracked.
How many rentals failed inspection due to permitting issues?
Answer: As of May 10, 2016, seven inspections have been performed and no rentals have failed
an inspection for permitting issues.
What was the most unsafe/criminal rental, and how much will it cost (permits and fines)
for that rental to be compliant?
Answer: There have been 7 inspections to date.
Five passed with no corrections needed.
One required premise identification to be installed and missing electrical circuit covers to
be replaced. No permits are required for either item of these corrections and both were
fixed within 7 days.

The other property was missing the electrical panel cover, none of the circuits were
labeled and there were circuit covers missing. The paint in the laundry room was cracked
and peeling on all of the walls and ceiling, indicating excessive moisture. Venting of the
room was advised, but is not required. Re -inspection was scheduled for 30 days to allow
property owner to have items fixed. No permit is required for these items.
How many rentals were deemed "illegal" and the occupants required to vacate?
Answer: No rentals have been deemed illegal and no occupants have been required to vacate.
As discussed in the Council Agenda Report for this item, staff intends to track a variety of
informational items and statistics associated with implementation of the RHIP. Staff will make
this information available to the public on the City's website, and will provide regular memo
updates to the Council, as directed.
