Subject: Park reserve fund proposal
The council will have received a proposal for a park reserve fund for the Anholm area. You were reminded that
this area is the only neighborhood without a park available to its residents. Now that the budget has a surplus to
allocate, it is paramount that a decades long promised park be an allocation, with the suggested amount of 2.8
million.
A local park is an investment in any neighborhood. While it does not produce tax revenue, and does require
maintenance, it reaps its worth in untold savings. Health, harmony, happiness: 3 H's with which a park blesses
the community. Families, children, mothers with strollers, babies and toddlers socializing, soccer teams, courting
couples, dog walkers, picnics and events, pause time for the mailman during the lunch break, watching the
leaves change color, viewing the sunset, learning sportsmanship, frisbee and catch play, jogging on soil rather
than cement, and perhaps even tennis (it is rather far to go to the other side of town for some tennis)... all and
more witnessed within a park.
My high school buddy, Maggie Corbett, went to Chicago to work with Xerox. She married Richard Daley, and
became Chicago's most famous First Lady. She devoted herself to cultural charities, particularly for children.
She was beloved, and to honor her, Chicago designated prime lakefront land with the newly opened Margaret
Daley Park.Look it up on its website. Chicago knows that a park is the place to build community and reduce
crime, the place to bring unity to a community. We know that too, and so does this City Council.
Have the courage and foresight and wisdom to designate a reserve for a park. Neighborhood wellness does not
issue from sophisticated new software for city Admin. Put yourselves on the record for a new park to be
established during the 100th anniversary year of national parks.
