Subject: For tonight's agenda: Funds for Park
Date: Tue, 14 Jun 2016 12:34:59 -0700
Dear Mayor Marx and San Luis Obispo City Council Members,
Please place at least $2.8 million of recently realized, undedicated funds into a reserve fund for a "North Broad"
neighborhood park. The benefit to San Luis Obispo residents of all ages will be significant. Opportunities for
recreation and open space in neighborhoods mutually enhance our quality of life.
The identified need in City studies for a park in this part of town has gone unmet for nearly 15 years. As the City
looks to develop a well -crafted "Bike Boulevard" on North Broad street, securing a park in that vicinity would add
another benefit to that project as well, linking the entire City's population to more recreational facilities.
As a possible location for a "North Broad" Park, one of the best locations would be at 71 Palomar. Although the
property is currently in escrow, the current plan for development is ridiculous and not consistent with
neighborhood character. This current "deal" will most likely fall out of escrow. The current plan threatens the
integrity of the historically registered Sandford home that is over 100 years old, as well as 51 mature trees, that
should also be protected.
As a park, this property would be surrounded by senior citizens residing at The Villages, professionals, and families
living in an established R-1 neighborhood and students who reside at the adjacent apartment complex.
The lot has street access on two sides, a hillside location with magnificent views, and over four dozen mature trees
that are home to abundant wildlife.
In closing, whether a park is able to be established at 71 Palomar or not, there will most certainly be a location that
would meet this neighborhood need in the near future. Please reserve the $2.8 million in funds for a park so that
we, as citizens, have the ability to work with City staff to fulfill this unmet need.
Sincerely,
Mila Vujovich-La Barre
