Subject: For Cultural Heritage Committee 6/27/16 Meeting re: Creamery Bldg.
Meeting:_'
Item:
My name is Ursula Bishop and I will not be able to attend the Monday, June 27 CHC meeting regarding the
proposed rehab and new construction of the Creamery building.
I live on Dana street, which is adjacent to the Creamery. Dana Street is an old, historical neighborhood. It is a
residential street and most of the homes on the creek side of the street closest to the Creamery are owner
occupied. Several of the proposed changes/additions will seriously affect our neighborhood and I ask that you
find it in your purview to protect our historic neighborhood and find that the following changes would not be
compatible with our historic neighborhood and district.
The new roll up doors and outdoor patio at Spikes.
2. The taqueria and adjacent outdoor patio.
3. The doors in the easterly wall of building 2. (At the 4/15 presentation the architect presenting the project said
these would be similar to the doors on the creek side of the restaurant. I pointed out that there was more room
on the east side and the opening could lead to outdoor dining as well additional noise issues. He did not
disagree and suggested the possibility of building a berm to absorb noise. Which would not work, of course. I
am including this information to document the likelihood of that space easily transforming to outdoor dining
and the additional noise that would be directly related to the opened wall.)
When you choose to live downtown you acknowledge and accept there will be noise and disruption, but as the
city wants people to live downtown, you also expect that common sense will be used when considering
approving changes that will add to an already high level of noise, etc., especially when these changes and
additional noise will be immediately adjacent to a residential neighborhood.
I ask you to review the pre -written findings in the pre -written resolution approving this property. Specifically #2
and then #4. I feel it is a stretch to call this end of town part of the downtown core. Projects that would work in
the "core" do not work next to residential neighborhoods.
I know there are always discussions regarding "purview" and what certain committees can or cannot do. I
believe that your committee purview can be thoughtfully considered and you could find the current proposals I
cite in this letter do not fit or belong in this historical district.
Thank you.
Ursula Bishop
