This historic property is essential to preserve for several reasons. First, the Sanford house is essential to the character of the surrounding neighborhood. One of the unique characteristics of San Luis Obispo is the integration of historic sites with established neighborhoods. Removing or relocating a historical building off to a corner of a multi unit housing complex does nothing to preserve the uniqueness of the original site. Second, the Sanford house is an excellent example of the historic context of SLO. The property represents an original architectural period and style, which show the history and legacy of early San Luis. The history of the original and subsequent owners are part of SLO's past. And, like some of the other historic properties throughout the city, this is a unique example of a specific type of architecture that also warrants preservation. Third, the number of mature trees on the property are impossible to replace. If the Sanford house were to be moved and apartments built, an essential part of the original property and its context would be lost. Simply preserving the structure of the house alone without its context or history does a disservice to the legacy of San Luis. For these reasons, I strongly encourage you to preserve the historic Sanford house and property and reject the application of the developers. Thank you, Alison Preston
