Dear ARC Commissioners,
RECEIVED
CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO
AUG 01 2016
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
I am writing to voice my support of the project as I am not able to be there to speak in person.
As a paid civil engineering consultant on the project, I realize my input will be not be viewed as partial, but I
feel I can also give you a unique perspective I have as a result of the privilege of being on this project team and
working closely with Loren for the last 9 months:
The developer, Loren Riehl only considered local consultants for this project. Most of the live or work
in SLO and all embrace the character and quality of live in this city.
Throughout the process, I have observed Loren to be amenable not only to changes the CHC, Planning
Department, Public Works and Transportation staff have requested, but has sought to design a project
that takes no code exceptions and fits the spirit of the design guidelines as well as utilizing the density
that the City has already approved. He truly works with the city in spirit of a "team" and not "us vs
them" and is an exemplary example of what a good partnership between a City and private developer
should be. Please take advantage of this opportunity you have to work with a reasonable developer.
And lastly, If the ARC conditions the project in any way that does not allow the full density of the project to be
utilized, the project should not be supported by anyone. By default, not utilizing the scarce resource of R4 zone
land in the city puts undue pressure (whether occupied by students or not?) on outlying areas of San Luis
Obispo and unwinds years of public input, study, and approvals. (for example, see recently proposed 55 acre
annexation up in the Irish Hills, winding its way through City Council virtually unopposed) This simply does
not allow for smart growth. Project conditions (if any) should be carefully considered and directed very
specifically to ensure that the applicant team can meet the conditions completely while still fully utilizing the
density of this site.
Thank you,
Truitt Vance
