Subject: 1259 Laurel Lane - Opinions for Tonight's Meeting g
Hello,
Item: 3
I'm a resident in the Lofts of Laurel complex, which is adjacent to the proposed 1259 Laurel Lane project. I'm
unable to attend tonight's meeting and have the following concerns:
Parking
While the mixed-use lot provides parking for the businesses and residents, it does not address the street parking
issues on Laurel Lane and Southwood Dr. Southwood Dr often does not have available parking between Laurel
Lane and Femwood Dr. Residents from the condominium complex on Southwood Dr and Laurel Ln usually
park on the street instead of the rear parking lot since access to their condo is easier. Nearby businesses utilize
the street parking. Visitors to our complex use the street parking too. Sometimes Laurel Lane doesn't have
available spots until past the bus stop.
I'm concerned that residents of the proposed project will park on the street since it would provide easier access
to some of the units. If this happens, parking for the businesses and other residences could be affected.
Trash
Our complex's dumpster is near the walkway of the proposed project. We have on-going illegal dumping issues
that we are trying to resolve. Owners in my complex clean-up the area and we pay for extra trash pick-ups. It
seems like our dumpster could be closer to the proposed trash area within the complex. Please consider us when
designing the trash plans.
Sidewalk Width
Laurel Lane has a generous sidewalk width (on the east) that allows groups to walk together. It appears that the
plan is to REDUCE the sidewalk width. The eastern sidewalk of Laurel Lane is used by different groups.
Groups of school children use it to access the crossing guard at the corner of Laurel Lane and Augusta St.
Families use it to access the corner market. Disabled members of our community use it too. People used the
sidewalk more when more attractors existed (market, laundry, and restaurants). I assume that more people
would use the sidewalk again once more businesses return. I would like the sidewalk left at the current width. It
provides a nice feel to the neighborhood.
Safety - Bikes and Pedestrians
Could the project include some measures to increase bicycle and pedestrian safety on Laurel Lane? Lots of bike
parking is being provided at the proposed complex. Crossing 4 lanes of traffic on a bike could be difficult at the
proposed/existing ingress and egress locations.
I'm also concerned about people crossing Laurel Lane to access the proposed businesses and the proposed
residents accessing the parks/school. I feel that the intersections of Laurel Lane/Southwood Dr and Laurel
Lane/Augusta St are different from other intersections in SLO. Seems like intersections with this width tend to
have signals for traffic control. I have seen many vehicles run the stop signs or suddenly brake. Unfortunately,
my neighbor was hit by a car at Laurel Lane/Southwood Dr intersection. Please consider adding additional
safety measures for the the new and existing residents of the neighborhood.
Thank you for considering my concerns.
