Subject:Laguna Lake Dredging Project
Date:Wednesday, August 10, 2016 1:59:53 PM
Dear Mr. Hill:
We have lived near Laguna Lake (837 Vista del Arroyo), in San Luis Obispo, for over
twenty years. Over that time, we have seen the Lake in all types of conditions...e.g.
full, not so full, even dry (as it was during the drought until this past Spring). Clearly,
Laguna Lake needs to be dredged. In our opinion, it should have been dredged
when it was dry...to make the excavation easier and cheaper. It is surprising that the
City of San Luis Obispo, knowing that a dredging project would be necessary sooner
or later, was not prepared to implement a "shovel ready" project during those dry
conditions. Similarly, it is discouraging that the dredging project is still some time
away into the future.
The primary purpose of this communication to you is to state emphatically two points:
1) Laguna Lake should be dredged as soon as possible; 2) Laguna Lake is a
citywide asset and, as such, should be paid for out of existing City funds or, failing
that, a citywide funding measure. It is patently unfair to think about foisting such an
important and costly project on the people who happen to live near the Lake. To us,
this makes sense and is a fair way to go forward. We also have been told that it was
a City decision, some years ago, to re-route Prefumo Creek so that it emptied into
Laguna Lake. This decision, we are told, dramatically increased the rate of silting
and the need for periodic dredging.
Thank you for your attention, Brian & Diane Reynolds
