Subject: In Support of 22 North Chorro
Dear Council Members,
This project should be allowed to move forward as it is in line with the planning approved by a majority of the residents of
San Luis Obispo.
I understand there is a small but vocal minority of people that do not wish for this project to move forward due to any
number of reasons that include, but are not limited to excess noise from student housing, parking/traffic concerns,
environmental impacts, etc. Many of the vocal minority do not live in this specific area, to begin with, and truth be told (if
you listen to their conversations before any hearings) they simply join forces to fight any development of any kind.
We all know that the area around Foothill and Chorro are high in student housing at this current moment. We know that
there are multiple students living in these single family residences in and around the area, so the argument that
developments such as this will negatively impact the surrounding neighborhoods is about the same as saying a bottle of
water dropped into the ocean could lead to coastal flooding. Cal Poly has been around since the early 1900's. There have
been students living in this town before most people living in the city were born. San Luis Obispo is a college town in
many respects and this should not come as a surprise to anyone currently living here, or planning to live here. Cal Poly is
well regarded in the academic world and brings many bright young minds to this community. Many of which will continue
to live here and contribute to our hometown. Should we really support anti -development movements toward higher density
developments because there may be more students living there?
As a resident of this community, it is hard to ignore the pro -environmental aspects surrounding us today. We have bike to
work month, new bike trails and hiking trails being provided, more natural gas buses, carpool programs, etc. Many
students and new residents are coming to this area because of the culture created and lifestyle San Luis Obispo is
offering. The proposed development at 22 North Chorro will have to adhere to all of the new LID building guidelines that
take the environmental footprint of new developments into consideration.
The final argument that seems to be common amongst many of the vocal minority is the adverse effects on traffic to the
local residents. Some seem to think that 20 or so vehicle parking spots will lead to just too many cars on the road and will
cause delays to everyday travel and lifestyle. Some will say that the amount of parking provided is not near enough and
our streets will be filled with more cars. I would like to point out that this area already experiences these types of "issues"
due to the amount of students living in single family residents throughout the neighborhoods. I would also like to point out
a number of students biking, or walking to school from much farther up Foothill. To think that all of the sudden, the
residents in this proposed development will all own vehicles and all be driving to school doesn't seem to make much
sense.
I sincerely thank you for taking the time to hear all arguments and make a sound decision for the betterment of our
community. I sincerely doubt that having an empty lot at the corner of Chorro and Foothill (caddy corner to the revitalized
shopping center) is in the best interest of this great community. Please accept my support for the project at 22 Chorro!
Sincerely,
Ryan Monie
