I am writing in support of Transitions-MHA's Bishop Street Studios Project being presented at
your next meeting on 11/15/16.
My professional career was mostly spent working for County Behavioral Health Services and I
can attest to the need for very, very affordable and supported housing for clients of that agency.
It is very difficult for an individual to manage, or an agency to treat a person with serious mental
health issues without secure, stable and affordable housing.
Mental health professionals began to realize the need for housing for clients in the late 1970's.
This County helped create Transitions in 1979 as a non-profit organization to manage the
housing that the County supported then and now. This project is a wonderful opportunity to
continue to expand affordable and safe housing for our local clients.
Transitions -MHA will provide on-site staff and case management and nearby Behavioral Health
Services will provide treatment for the tenants which should alleviate concerns of neighboring
residents.
At the same time, an iconic building will be made safe and usable and remain a part of
City/County history.
Thank you for your consideration,
Janet Amanzio RN, MA
