COUNCIL MEETINU: 10-1 Y'1 G ITEM NO.:_P_(j6)iC_ We are requesting the following actions be taken to address the unsafe traffic situations for Teach Elementary School: 1. Immediately Install a set of flashing school zone speed signs on Slack Street, preferably with radar, to alert drivers of their speed and provide visual reinforcement the area is a speed restricted school zone. This idea is supported by the traffic department but they need the go-ahead from city council. 2. Reduce the school zone speed limit to 20 MPH which will lower the chances of a fatality from 20% to 5% as shown by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 3. Further restrict parking between Grand and Pacheco Way, to a mix of school permit parking and loading/unloading zones with configuration input from the School. 4. Provide for a safe pedestrian crossing to the North side of Slack Street, including a portable or permanent stop sign and road humps. This is a problem that requires immediate attention. The Traffic Department has already determined the area is unsafe, supports the flashing school zone lights and other remedies. Now we need you to act. We are asking this City Council to be proactive in providing both immediate and long term relief for this area; before a preventable tragedy occurs. I know together we can quickly resolve the dangerous situation currently facing the staff, students and parents of Teach Elementary and make the safety of our school children a priority. I also would like to thank Jennifer Rice from the Transportation Department and Sergeant John Villanti of the SLO PD for the support they have provided.
