Subject:Incorporating innovative affordable housing possibilities in the zoning regulation update
I'm writing concerning updates to city zoning regulations.
I volunteer with Hope's Village of SLO,which wants to help solve the homelessness and affordable housing crises in San
Luis Obispo by building tiny house villages.
The tiny house village model is an exciting and innovative way of addressing these crises. It has been tried with success
elsewhere.
I have met with staff at the planning department who tell me they would be interested in fitting tiny house villages into
the current city zoning scheme which currently does not have any categories that allow for such villages). All they need
is a green light from the city council, which you can provide for them during the zoning regulation update process.
Other California cities, like Fresno and Ojai, have already changed their zoning codes to allow for tiny houses,so SLO
staff would not have to invent this from scratch.
I encourage you to instruct staff to incorporate tiny house villages into the SLO zoning regulations.
