Subject: FW: Bishop's Peak trail access
Importance: High
SLO City Council and Chief Olson,
I am writing you all to request that you reconsider restricting parking access on Highland and Oakridge as a solution to
the emergency egress issue at the Highland drive trailhead. This solution is shortsighted in that you will be removing
one problem, and creating another in a different part of the neighborhood. We live on a Patricia court, across from the
Patricia Drive trailhead. It is normally quiet, our children are free to play outside, ride their bikes, etc. We had a
preview of what this proposed closure will look like in our quiet neighborhood. During the recent maintenance parking
closure of the Highland area, the impact on the Patricia Drive trailhead was huge. Cars used the culdesac as a
turnaround, driving faster than they should and street parking was taken up by folks using the trailhead. People were
hanging out around their cars, and while most were nice and respectful, others were using vulgar language and
completely disrespecting the fact that they were in someone's front yard. During this temporary closure, I didn't feel
that it was safe for my children to be outside with this increase in traffic and crowds. A raised crosswalk is not going
alleviate the impact of the Highland/Oarkridge parking closure on Patricia Drive area residents. This is a problem that
was partially created by the city. The city has, in the past, promoted Bishop's Peak as a tourist attraction, with little or
no consideration that this is where we live. We, as a community, need to come together and find a better solution that
works for all of us, not just those who live on Highland and Oakridge.
I want to be clear that we love hiking Bishop's Peak, and everyone in the community should get to enjoy this local
treasure, but is there another access point that would reduce overall traffic in the neighborhood? For many years we
have heard about potentially developing a parking area and a legitimate trailhead on Foothill, away from residential
neighborhoods. Is this still a consideration?
