HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-03-2017 Itme 9, Culhane COUNCIL MEETING:_ l -3 _ / ITEM NO.: - -'f 1.2 ESE JAN 032017 SLO CITY CLE - From: "Connor Culhane" < Date: Sun, Jan 1, 2017 at 2:10 PM -0800 Subject: Support Item 9 (1/3/17 meeting): Purchases for Open Space Preservation and Maintenance To: "E-mail Council Website" <emailcouncilC&slocity.org> I'm writing on behalf of the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers to encourage the council to support the Ranger Service in their efforts to maintain SLO's City Open Space. Appropriate fleet additions will help the Ranger Service accomplish the City's Major City Goal of Open Space Preservation. The Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers (CCCMB) have worked closely with the City of San Luis Obispo and the Ranger Service for over a decade to build and maintain trails throughout City Open Space. We believe additional machinery would allow the Ranger Service to more efficiently maintain trailheads, parking areas, and existing "ranch roads" and access roads on city open space. Appropriately sized machinery, like a small mini -excavator, piloted by an operator experienced in singletrack trail -building, can also be used for trail construction. CCCMB recently worked with the Land Conservancy of SLO County to construct a 10 mile singletrack network of trails on the newly acquired Pismo Preserve property. A small mini -excavator and operator followed by a volunteer hand tool crew allowed for very efficient trail construction. Additionally, the Ranger Service already has a staff member that is a trained operator, has experience building singletrack trails with trail specific machinery, and was one of the operators for the Pismo Preserve trail -build project. This would allow the Ranger Service to quickly leverage the fleet additions to more efficiently meet the City's goals. Respectfully, Connor Culhane President, Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers
