COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Hello. My name is Lisa Sutherland and on behalf of my husband Kurt, and our family, I would like to
state our concerns regarding the Avila Ranch Project. We live off of Buckley Road at 4565 Mello Lane.
We have lived on Mello Lane for almost 25 years (35 years in SLO). Mello Lane is a eucalyptus tree
lined small dirt road with 6 family units on our lane. We have young families and teenage drivers on our
lane. We already feel the business of Buckley Road here. I hear and see every day how Buckley Road
gets used more and more as a raceway at certain times. We used to go for a walks down Buckley Road,
even ride horses not anymore. It is gradually getting harder to turn west from our little Lane. Cars are
not respectful towards us having to come to almost a complete stop before pulling off of Buckley onto
our Lane. One neighbor has already been rear ended. Having his car totaled and receiving bodily injury
because of someone not paying attention. There are always near misses or an impatient driver will cross
the double yellow lines toward on coming traffic to get around. This causes great stress to my family and
I know to our neighbors. I think about the poor people coming out of Davenport
Creek Road onto Buckley. It is already hard to see in both directions. More
cars would make this more dangerous. I cannot imagine the added stress to those coming
out onto 227 from Crestmont. I am concerned with the facts I have heard that the Avila Ranch project
will contribute 6,000 car trips a day in an area already congested. Then add in the San Luis Ranch
Development with 550 homes plus a hotel and retail, the senior citizens development next to Home
Depot, more housing in Perfumo Canyon and the Righetti development and wow --we've got a traffic
nightmare! The idea of a roundabout at Buckley and 227 at rush hour brings back memories and
nightmares of Rome. People here freak out at roundabouts. I do not think that is a good idea at all. This
project at best is just too big!! Being under the guise of affordable housing for the workforce is
laughable. Everything from peoples lives, schools, shopping, traffic congestion and quality of life will be
affected. I had an old person tell me one time that that area was a Native American camping ground and
there is a midden there. Please reconsider this project.
Respectively, Lisa Sutherland
