I had my home built in 1973, after leaving the San Francisco Bay Area because of the massive development. Now I am experiencing the same overdevelopment that made me leave the Bay Area. The Avila Ranch proposal will erode the air quality, and increase traffic congestion. I have witnessed Buckley Road change from a rural road, with very little traffic, to somewhat of a freeway. Cars frequently tear down Buckley Road in excess of 70 or 60 mph, since there are no stop signs. Accidents are common at the Hoover way /Buckley Road junction, and at the Vachell Lane/ Higuera Street junction. In addition, Buckley Road cannot handle the massive amount of vehicles that the Avila Ranch development will add. As it is now, we cannot use the Vachell Lane/ Higuera Street junction in the morning and evening because of the amount of vehicles trying to turn left on to Higuera Street. The same applies to making a right turn off of Buckley Road on to Broad Street. I realize that the city wants to provide additional housing for potential homebuyers, but from what I understand, there are no plans to widen Buckley Road in the foreseeable future. Cyclists will be at more of a risk if this is approved. This development will create more traffic congestion, and angry motorists. It is unconscionable that this plan even got this far. I'm sure it all comes down to money from developers. Many of which do not even live in SLO. If you are trying to make SLO into LA or the Bay Area, this will be one step towards doing that. I am in my mid 70's now, so I have been able to enjoy the wonderful lifestyle in SLO, but I now fear for my children and grandchildren, who will not experience SLO as I knew it. Please consider my comments. David Smith
