Dear Planning Commission Members,
RECEIVED
CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO
JAN 18 2017
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
I have read about the proposed Avila Ranch Development Project of 720 homes on Vachell Lane and Buckley Road. It seems
these homes being developed are considered "affordable housing", starting at just under $800,000. Perhaps the Planning
Commission Members salaries would accommodate this "affordable" housing but you are out of touch with our community if
you think that this is affordable for any more than a small percentage of our County's residents. This development will
adversely impact our roads, schools, and more importantly our water resources. Considering SLO residents have had to
severely ration water usage, all the while seeing rates go up and even being assessed higher rates because we RATIONED TOO
WELL?!? Are you kidding me?!? If water resources are truly of no concern to the commission, then why the need for rationing
and higher water rates in our area? If 3,000 plus residents move into the Avila Ranch Development homes, where will they get
their water? And what effect will it have on the groundwater table, or our City Water sources? With all the building boom of
housing going on in the City and surrounding areas, after years of drought, there will no doubt be an undeniable effect on our
water resources. Just because we've had a good amount of rain these last few weeks with water runoff, doesn't mean we are
out of this drought by a long shot. It will take up to 10 years of heavy rainy seasons to bring the water table back up.
I am asking you to consider the current residents who have been here for years, decades, and even generations and the impact
this will have on them. Please do not proceed with this project that will have a widespread, and devastating impact on our
community.
Thank you for your consideration,
Melanie Mattina
