Dear Council Members,
I am writing to express my serious concerns about the upcoming speech by Milo Yiannopoulos at Cal Poly San Luis
Obispo. I am a small winery owner in North County and a graduate of Cal Poly.
My concerns are based on the recent shooting of an organizer at University of Washington during Mr. Yiannopoulos'
speech by one of his supporters. I am a firm believer in Freedom of Speech, however I think a clear line must be
drawn between Free Speech and Hate Speech. That line has been crossed. The safety of our community and our
students is most important, and after reading the words of Mr. Yiannopoulos, I believe he not only does not have their
safety in mind but revels in the dangerous climate he creates.
After seriously weighing the dangers of limiting speech with the safety of our community, I must support not allowing
Mr. Yiannopoulos to speak at our University. I think ultimately, we need to preserve the longstanding climate of
kindness, safety and thoughtful discourse in our community and in the University we support. Our community
members need to know that you have their safety and well-being at the top of your list.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Dugan
