Subject: Broad Street Area Plan
Good Afternoon, Madam Mayor and Councilmembers:

RECEIVED
JAN 2 7 2017
I am writing to encourage the Council to address the long-standing need of the community bounded by South Street and Broad Street
for safer access from and into our neighborhood from Broad Street. Traffic has grown seemingly exponentially along Broad Street in
the 18 years that we have lived on Lawrence Drive. The continuing residential, commercial, and industrial development and infill
projects farther out on Broad Street -- together with the increasing commuter traffic pulsing up and down in the morning and later
afternoon -- have made it much more difficult for our neighbors to travel safely into and out of our neighborhood. Just recently there
was a really horrendous accident at the intersection of Lawrence and Broad, and the number of near -misses has certain increased, as
well. In the winter, when drivers are out in the twilight and darkness, the risks are really substantial for pedestrians, bicyclists, and
drivers, as people try to dart across Broad Street during traffic intervals -- or bring traffic to a halt in order to cross between the
signalized intersections at Orcutt and South.
To increase the traffic without addressing additional signals seems, at this point, to be extremely short-sighted.
I ask you to take steps to initiate our long-awaited traffic improvements so that our neighborhood has safer and more reliable turning
options.
Sincerely,
Paula
