Subject: 22 Chorro proposed development
To the members of SLO City Council:
One never knows the undercurrent of political decisions, but the flow around the development of 22 Chorro
Street is not good. At the meeting in which the former SLO City Council overturned the recommendation of the
ARC on this project, I sat right next to the developer of the project. I could hear him speaking to his entourage.
saw his face up close. There is no doubt in my mind that what I heard from him and what I saw in his face
indicated he already knew the decision that would be made that night.
Personally, it made my stomach turn to see all those good people from our neighborhoods near 22 Chorro
hoping the City Council would see what is so plain to see — the development is not good for the neighborhoods
near there, nor does it benefit the city in the affordable housing area. That claim is bogus, as are the claims the
development is "green" with its biking plans, that off-street parking is not an issue. It is, plain and simple, over-
priced student housing. I guess, though, those realities did not play in that decision.
So, I am asking the new council to reconsider the reality here, to not let this arrogant developer get his way.
This man does not even live here. He could care less about SLO. The dollars to be made are his driving force.
How about we put the good people who live near this proposed development before his greed? How about we
do what is right for our community? How about we actually work to develop desperately needed affordable
housing for young families? How about we put the onus of student housing where it squarely belongs — onto
Cal Poly's back?
I am sure you get my point here — do the right thing, not the "political" thing. Please consider the decent people
who live in the adjacent areas near the development. We truly care about the communities in which we live,
work, and commune with our neighbors.
Please consider this letter in relation to the 71 Palomar proposed development, as the same community ethic
applies.
Thanking you in advance for stepping up to higher ground,
Brandon Jones
