It seems any serious need for money the City has should be sorted out in a more effective and lasting way. I have no working knowledge of City finances. However, as a member of the public who should not be penalized by higher fees, my first suggestion is to put a freeze on hiring (a recent study showed San Luis Obispo has many more employees than other cities its size) You also have the ability to limit starting salaries (some less desirable cities have to offer more to attract people --such is not the case in San Luis Obispo!). You might even consider less than $1 million every four years to the Chamber. I'm sure bright ideas can be considered that will make a bigger difference to the budget. Appeals I know of were made to benefit the Council and allowed them to weigh in. Some decisions were made by the ARC that Council had no knowledge of since the issue had not been before them. We know that Staff influences Commission members in their decisions. We thought Council might want to consider the items and hoped they would make wiser decisions. In other words, the appeals were not frivolous. Nearly $300 ($281) is not easily spent but is done on principle. the public most interested in the best decisions for their city. It is clearly unfair and unnecessary. Thank you, Council, for seeing this fee increase as punitive. Camille Small Nearly $800 ($779) appears to be a deterrent to
