HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-14-2017 Item 1, OadesCOUNCIL MEETING-.__4Li REC EIVEU )TEM NO.: MAR 13 2017 From: "Shea Oades" < Date: Sun, Mar 12, 2017 at 9:12 PM -0700 Subject: Recreational Cannabis To: "E-mail Council Website" <emailcouncileslocity.or > I would like to voice my opinion on recreational cannabis in the City of San Luis Obispo. As a voter in the City of San Luis Obispo and the State of California, I did not vote for the legalization of recreational marijuana. HOWEVER, I do believe in legalization of recreational marijuana; my decision was rooted mainly in specific policy nuances of the proposition. Even as someone who voted against the proposition, I believe San Luis Obispo should respect the decision of it's citizens and the citizens of of the State of California by not banning recreational cannabis use in the City of San Luis Obispo. Not only is it an opportunity to boost the economy of San Luis Obispo, as proven by economies of states who have already legalized recreational marijuana, but also the City of San Luis Obispo should be focusing its time and attention on issues that actual matter and directly affects its residents. I would appreciate if the City spent their time addressing sustainability, homeless, and housing issues and worked towards improving education. This are the matters that widely affect our City and would have the greatest positive impact. Please spend your time making policy changes and holding public forums for these issues and NOT banning recreational cannabis. Working towards policies that ban recreational cannabis in SLO is a waste of time and resources and a missed opportunity to improve our cities economy and collect tax money that could be used towards things like education!! Although I cannot attend the hearing this Tuesday, I hope my voice is heard. Expect to hear further from me if this continues to be a topic of discussion. Thank you, Shea Oades From: "Johnson, Derek" <diohnson rz;sfocit .or > Date: Mon, Mar 13, 2017 at 10:36 PM -0700 Subject: RE: DO NOT BAN RECREATIONAL CANNABIS To: "Shea Oades" < Dear Ms. Oades, MAR 14 2017 SLO CITY CLERK Thank you for reaching out to the City Council. Staff's recommendation tomorrow night is to continue with the status quo meaning that medical marijuana use can continue consistent with state law. Existing recreational use can also continue, meaning that a residence can have up to six plants that can be cultivated either indoors or outdoors and up to an ounce may be possessed for personal use. No commercial activities may currently take place and Staff is recommending that the Council provide direction on a variety of policy matters so that appropriate steps can be taken (i.e. public outreach, environmental review, policy and fiscal analysis) and return at a future Council meeting with appropriate actions.
