Subject: Night Hiking
Dear Mayor Harmon and Council:
Permit me to pose one question to any of you who might be giving even the tiniest consideration to allowing
night hiking.
Would you, as an elected representative of the people of this City, consider
the 'want' of a few residents more important than the 'need' of many?
If three of you can answer'yes', many residents will be eagerly awaiting
the next election.
Seriously, the position against such an endeavor: interrupting wild life, disturbing the quiet enjoyment of
residents and inviting outsiders from anywhere who may not consider either of the first two points is simply
not a risk you should be willing to take.
My understanding of others' desires is broad enough to accept there are
a few well-intentioned people who may wish to hike after dark on some work days. They, however, cannot
control or prevent the negative effects mentioned.
I do not wish to sound insensitive, but clearly the walk -after -work people must be told they will have to hike on
any day they do not work until dusk. They can find any number of ways to exercise on other days.
Living in a city with morros and mountains clearly does not signal an inalienable right to walk/hike/climb at
whim or want without consideration for possible consequences.
Thank you for any attempt to represent the majority concerned for the
good of all. Additionally, thank you for understanding why these guidelines were put in place to begin with.
Sincerely,
Camille Small
