Subject: 71 Palomar Sewer Incapacity
Dear Council Members,
Please see the attached note about the fact this huge project's sewage will feed into neighborhood sewer lines that are
inadequate and regularly overflow into the streets we live on and pollute waterways all the way to Avila Beach.

71 Palomar Project Will Increase Sewage Pollution of Our Neighborhood
Dear Mayor and Council Members,
One of the issues that staff refuses to call to your attention in connection with 71 Palomar is that
the huge amount of sewage generated by 150+ persons will be going into sewage pipes that are
incapable of handling existing flows — meaning our neighborhood will be flooded with even more
"crap" that much more frequently.
Here's a
about.
:: ;...., ..-• r,.,- - ,_ `,. `'.; .::' ^_ r' -inti:
This is raw sewage erupting from an inadequate sewer main in Broad at Murray. It not only
floods the street, it also dumps into Old Garden Creek and eventually flows into San Luis Creek
polluting everything from Murray to Avila Beach.
This particular day the city reported a 36,000 gallon spill! Two days earlier this same manhole
blew off completely, and I suspect even more spilled on that occasion. There's a second
manhole on Broad near Meinecke which fairly often does the same thing.
On both successive days at Broad/Murray, I observed cars splashing this raw sewage in all
directions — even onto sidewalks, bicyclists biking through it, joggers jogging through it. Hey, it's
just our way of being exposed to hepatitis and other third world diseases, I guess.
Why in the world would you add a huge new increment of sewage to pipes that are so
undersized they spill regularly?
In the interests of public health, please block the immense sewage -generating project at 71
Palomar.
Sincerely,
Richard Schmidt
