This letter is to review the points we made in hope of making it easier for you to come to your final recommendation to the San Luis Obispo City Council meeting in May. HomeShareSLO.... - meets all five of the HRC's funding priorities especially homeless prevention, affordable housing and providing supportive services, particularly for seniors and the disabled, while families could benefit as well; - is creative and innovative for SLO City, yet the concept has been proven successful in over 60 other cities over more than 40 years; - has successfully built a strong board, part-time staff, volunteers, prospective providers and seekers and funders in a remarkably short period of time - less than 18 months; - has a clear cost/benefit ratio by developing new affordable housing now instead of waiting for the completion of expensive, new construction; - lowers housing expenses and create more expendable income which allows for better nutrition and improved physical and mental health, which in turn benefits the whole community; - assists local citizens who will spend their money locally vs. other non -profits which as- sist clients to pay for services elsewhere; - needs the GIA grant to be as large as possible at this critical point in time. By taking a lead position as the largest city in our county, the GIA positions HomeShareSLO to increase funding from other cities as well as area donors and larger foundations; - considers the GIA grant to be seed money as we become less dependent in the future. We sincerely appreciate your preliminary funding decision and the increase of the remaining unassigned funds means a lot to us. Of the seven cities in the County, San Luis Obispo has the largest budget, the largest population and stands to gain the most from the HomeShareSLO program. Thus far, Grover Beach and Morro Bay, cities with populations considerably less than that of San Luis Obispo, have each given seed money of $5,000. To date we have appealed to Arroyo Grande, Pismo Beach, Atascadero and Paso Robles. Over time, we expect their support as well. Their decision will be influenced by San Luis Obispo City. In light of the points stated above and, in particular, the importance of San Luis Obispo taking a lead position, we respectfully request funding to be raised to $10,000. Thank you again for your time, consideration and commitment to make our city an innovative leader in solving the issues of homelessness, homeless prevention and affordable housing.
