5.Discussion Modifications to Art After Dark 2017 Programming
Public Comments:
Guest Papp stated that Art After Dark is an engine to get people to the house. There is no evidence
that barring people from viewing what they are interested in seeing will get them to comeback. Papp
belabored that the house is about the visitor not the Docent
Exofficio Member Darnell would like to make the parlor, library and dining room available
to guests of Art After Dark patrons.
Member Ulz expressed concern that not including the kitchen could create traffic flow
problems and would limit the number of exits during the program.
Member Ulz stated that the power of Art After Dark is to attract an audience that the house
does not normally attract. To deny patrons the opportunity to see the museum is a mistake.
Vice Chair Kincaid articulated concern that if the tours are free, the Jack House is losing out
on monies.
Member Ulz stated funding for museums is much easier to raise if you can prove you are
engaging with a wide and diverse audience.
Member Crotser voiced that a video could help show the upstairs without the help of extra
docents.

JHD May 2017 JHC Report by Marilyn Darnell
Docent News: Tribune “Good News” picture & caption announcing new JHD Board
Lost new docent, so down to 20 – Docents are frustrated and riled over lack of photos
Docent teams are collaborating on the 2017 monthly themes
Story Boards: Ownership clarification? Would be valuable to use those that describe Jack House
artifacts beside those artifacts, as well as use others for outreach.
Update request: National Register of Historic Places Plaque, where is it in the process?
SLO Chamber Visitor’s Guide $1,200 1/3 page (as before) Contact Jill LeMieux jill@slochamber.org
Implement Sunday Tour Times: 1pm 2pm 3pm to aid docents and guests in planning. BANNER to
announce regular JH opening “Sunday Tours 1pm 2pm 3pm” “Open Sunday 1pm – 4pm” $100
Handbook: Impressive as a reference, but somewhat impractical, as there is no way to add or change
information without writing in the book. Suggest using as a reference and cherry pick necessary info to
be compiled for future docents. “Jack House Copy” will be available in the house for reference,
preferably more than one copy.
2017 Monthly Themes
April 9 Opening Day! Sunday tours & The Evolution of Travel JACK FAMILY STYLE Exhibit
Between the birth of Robert Edgar Jack and 1928 when his daughter, Ethel,
traveled to Europe travel progressed from horse and buggy to luxury liner, from
need to leisure. Luggage advanced in material, size, weight, design, and purpose.
Specialty pieces came into use when travelling evolved into America’s favorite
pastime for those with means, such as the Jack family. $600 actual $468
May Mother’s Day! Pioneer Nellie Hollister Jack
This day will focus on the pioneering spirit of Nellie as she came to California in
1860 by wagon train from Ohio with her family as a young lady of 11. Docents
will share the meaning of sayings the settler’s used, such as “mind your Ps & Qs”
as well as life for a woman of the west. $300
Jun Father’s Day! Captain Robert Jack - FATHER & GRANDFATHER
The father of Robert Edgar Jack was a sea captain for the Sewell shipbuilding
company of Bath, Maine for nearly 40 years, the longest in the company’s
history. Through his regular reports to the Sewell’s and his personal letters to his
wife, Nancy, REJ’s mother, Captain Jack is revealed as a husband and father. His
letters will be on loan courtesy of Marilyn Darnell. He was described in the
6-1
Tribune on October 4, 1879 when he visited SLO. /// Story boards: quotes from
his letters, pertinent info such as duties of a sea capt. $400
Jul Edgar Jack wrote how he celebrated Independence Day in 1865 with a “Hurah!”
For Strawberries!!” and in 1867 he couldn’t remember that he “enjoyed myself
better.” Facsimiles of those letters will be on display. How about serving
strawberries? Simply, one large strawberry per person would make the point and
be less trouble and expense. $250
Aug Focus: Mr. Jack’s Civil War service protecting Harrisburg, Pennsylvania during the
Battle at Gettysburg and what he may have experienced and called “The
Roughest Kind of Time,” a booklet written by Marilyn Darnell drawing on facts
gleaned from her on-site research. $200
Aug 18-19 FJH Civil War Reenactment n/a

Friends of the Jack House Monthly Updates and Proposed Events
MONTHLY UPDATES
FRIENDS OF THE JACK HOUSE REPORT, 8 MARCH 2017
For Art after Dark in March, the Jack House hosted a display of Paula Zima’s maquettes of a
proposed Theodore Roosevelt environmental monument for Mitchell Park, along with
related displays on portrait sculpture in San Luis Obispo and the history of Mitchell Park.
The event attracted 50 attendees, who provided the monument’s steering committee with
11 detailed written responses to a questionnaire on parks, placemaking, public portrait
sculpture, and the Theodore Roosevelt monument.
—James Papp, President, Friends of the Jack House
FRIENDS OF THE JACK HOUSE REPORT, 12 APRIL 2017
For Art after Dark in April, the Jack House hosted a pop-up exhibition of California travel
ephemera in collaboration with Cal Poly Special Collections and curated by Laura Sorvetti.
Torrential rain depressed attendance throughout the city, but though we had our lowest
Art after Dark turnout ever (15), we finally surpassed the History Center’s turnout—by 50
percent.
—James Papp, President, Friends of the Jack House
