HomeMy WebLinkAbout05_24-25_2017 PC Correspondence - San Luis Ranch (Godsey) Meeting: pLbS`,Z'-71S,Lpi} From: Melissa Godsey < RECEIVED eM: Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2017 7:48 PM CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO To: Advisory Bodies Subject: San Luis Ranch MAY 2 5 1017 Members of the Planning Commission, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT My family (husband and two children under 7 years old), rent in Los Verdes II, and would like to express our support for the San Luis Ranch project. This is my 20th year living in SLO County, 13th in SLO City. If you would have asked me when I graduated high school in 2001 "what do you think your primary opposition will be in carving out a niche for yourself as an adult?" I might have answered "the patriarchy!" or maybe "greedy corporations!" and while there might be some truth to both of those, the real, practical day-to- day opposition comes from a more unexpected source, in the form of NIMBYism. The same folks who selected people like me for scholarships way back when, and said "you can be whatever you want to be!" are now appending the words "—just not here in SLO." "Spread your wings and fly! Elsewhere! Anywhere! Just not in my backyard." But rather than deal in feelings, I'd prefer to deal in facts. The fact is that a community that drives out its young families, a community that doesn't make room for us, is a community that is atrophying. If we truly value diversity, that must include economic and age diversity, and we must take the necessary steps that make it possible for all of us to thrive. Assuming this project continues to support multi -modal transportation, and safe routes to school and nearby shopping, we enthusiastically support it. Thanks for your consideration, Melissa Jenna Godsey *so Sent from my iPhone
