Discussions with the purchaser (a Point San Luis Lighthouse super docent) are for June of July, so motion “for a tea in the Jack Garden and tour of the Jack House for eight, at a time or times to be determined with the community service and events supervisor, fees to be waived in recognition of the Histo ry Center’s services to the Jack House.” Order of Minor Historians, a local history group, would like to do a barbeque in the Jack Garden and have a tour of the house and a talk on Jack matters Tuesday evening, June 20. Motion “for a barbeque in the Jack Garden, tour of the Jack House, and talk about the Jack economic and political interests, Tuesday evening 20 June 2017, arrangements to be determined with the community service and events supervisor, fees to be waived as a program furthering the educational mission of the house.” The History Center is organizing a historic foodways week in collaboration with Sarah Lohman, the author of Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine. We have the opportunity to be the capstone event with a barbeque in the garden on Sunday, July 16. Motion, “for a barbeque in the Jack Garden Sunday 16 July 2017 as part of the History Center’s historic foodways week, arrangements to be determined with the community service and events supervisor, fees to be waived as a program furthering the educational mission of the house.” 1-5 6 Public Comment None Committee Comments Vice Chair Kincaid asked if docents would be required for these events to provide tours. July – December 2017 themes & anticipated expenses Jun Father’s Day! Captain Robert Jack - FATHER & GRANDFATHER The father of Robert Edgar Jack was a sea captain for the Sewell shipbuilding company of Bath, Maine for nearly 40 years, the longest in the company’s history. Through his regular reports to the Sewell’s and his personal letters to his wife, Nancy, REJ’s mother, Captain Jack is revealed as a husband and father. His letters will be on loan courtesy of Marilyn Darnell. He was described in the Tribune on October 4, 1879 when he visited SLO. /// Story boards: quotes from his letters, pertinent info such as duties of a sea captain. $400 Jul Edgar Jack wrote how he celebrated Independence Day in 1865 with a “Hurah!” For Strawberries!!” and in 1867 he couldn’t remember that he “enjoyed myself better.” Facsimiles of those letters will be on display. How about serving strawberries? Simply, one large strawberry per person would make the point and be less trouble and expense. $250 Aug 20 Focus: Lecture by Marilyn Darnell, historian and author, on Mr. Jack’s Civil War service protecting Harrisburg, Pennsylvania during the Battle at Gettysburg and what he may have experienced and called “The Roughest Kind of Time.” Would the JHC fund the printing of 50 booklets of “The Roughest Kind of Time” to sell that weekend at an approximate cost of $2 per booklet? Marilyn Darnell wrote it drawing on facts gleaned from her on-site research in 2016. $100 Rack cards Banner: Suggest making one banner that says something like “Jack House 536 Marsh St. Forefather of San Luis Obispo Sundays 1PM – 4PM” with “patch” ($35) that can be changed at will highlighting theme. That way any one of the months could easily be advertised with less cost. Reimbursement to Toni Kincaid of $55 for the bookcase in the Jack House to display books for sale. Update Request: National Register of Historic Places Plaque The Evolution of Travel – Jack Family Style Exhibit Donation of linens 5-1 Sept Birthday Party! Cake or cake and ice cream celebrating R.E. Need: JH brochures to pass out. Meanwhile, regular tours at the house – 1pm to 4pm Nov Furniture Dressing: Jack textiles dress up the furniture putting linens, such as doilies, runners, dresser scarves, bedspreads, pillows and tablecloths on display. $250 Dec Christmas [first two Sat. & Sun.] In Sept we focused on Ethel’s birthday. She was the child that lived in the JH the longest. The exhibit shed light on travel of the 1920s, so how about Christmas in the 1920s? $500 2018 Jack House Monthly Themes: April: Horticulture books on display from Jack Collection May: Mother’s Day - Women in REJ’s life (mother, sister, wife, daughters) pictures & info June: Birthday Party!
