CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO

COMMUNITY D1=VELOPMENT
I am one of several new faculty recruited to Cal Poly from other locations in the nation. I am moving from Athens, Ohio where I
rent the nicest apartment in town, for about $1100 per month; and three bedroom houses are $175,000.
I have long wanted to contribute to the very unique, important work that Cal Poly is doing and to enjoy a California lifestyle.
Unfortunately, the cost of living is so high, that I have sold many of my possessions and had to make two week-long trips to the
area just to locate one rental that would accept me and my dog. That is ridiculous, and while sprawl and unfettered
development results in catastrophe of all sorts; so does a housing shortage such that the best talents cannot be recruited to
the businesses and institutions of San Luis Obispo.
I request that you kindly put forth your best efforts to figure out how faculty on CSU salaries can afford to bring our efforts and
lives to San Luis Obispo. I am among the most educated people on the planet, but I can't get a mortgage for a 1 bedroom
condo. Please fix that! I understand that is a simplification of your region- but I thank you in advance for your attention to
housing affordability in SLO.
Sincerely,
Dr. Andrew Byrne
