Subject:
Support for Workforce Housing
Hello,
RECEIVED
CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO
JUN 2 6 2017
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
My husband (cc'd here) and I are local small business owners in town and are in the life -building stage ourselves and
we support the Avila Ranch project and others like it to offer relief for housing costs.
As business owners, we feel the pinch for attracting top talent to the area and it causes operational concerns for us when
our team has to move to North County or South County where they can afford homes, but still are expected to be at
work at 5:45am. We also can't truly afford to buy a home locally ourselves and are renting because we can't be far from
our business.
I know you hear many voices from the public and dissension from those who have retired and are at the sunset of their
lives, those who have time to come and represent their perspectives. I'm sure if I were older and already owned a home,
I wouldn't want the increased traffic or congestion/sprawl but I'm not. I'm part of a group of young professionals who
are working incredibly long weeks to try to "make it" here and stay. We can't make it in personally to show our support
for this project, but wanted you to know that we are very much there in spirit.
From my perspective here is what I value about this project:
1. We lack workforce housing and have a severe housing shortage in SLO
2. The housing inventory we have does not meet the needs of the middle class
3. I'm a huge proponent of net zero energy communities and believe this is paving the way towards beneficial
environmental stewardship. Approving this project will not over burden the City with more electrical power
needs compared to other projects
4. Traffic improvements have been considered with this proposal and approving this plan will help fund a big
solution to easy access to 101 vs. funneling people once again back through Buckley or South Higuera
5. The community has advised and influenced the design of this project and it is highly anticipated and valued. We
hope you take popularity into consideration
You have the power to influence how this community evolves and who it includes. It is my hope as projects pop up that
you keep the young professionals and small business owners in mind. We may not have the time to show up to every
meeting, but we care greatly about making San Luis Obispo is diverse and vibrant community the represents the people
working here.
My best,
Paden Hughes
