Subject. Support for Avila Ranch
Hello City of SLO City Council & Planning Committee,
RECEIVED
CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO
JUN 27 2011
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
I am writing to encourage you to support Avila Ranch and other projects like it. With the exception of attending college in
Sacramento, I have lived in San Luis Obispo County since I was 5.
I love so many things about our area (hiking, the ocean, the wine, the good food, the nice people, the weather) and am so
proud to call San Luis Obispo my home. However, like so many others, I am stuck in a pattern of renting that makes it nearly
impossible to ever call SLO my forever home. High rents make it difficult to save for a down payment, especially on a single
person's income, and especially in a city where the median home price is over $650k (from Zillow). Add to it that I have a dog
and a cat (yes my choice, but not an outlandish choice), and my options for rentals are few and far between.
I am lucky- I have what I consider to be a good job in San Luis Obispo. I work for a great company, am treated well and am paid
fairly, and yet the challenge of home ownership still seems unsurmountable. I have advanced degrees and get to actually apply
them to my work. I participate on a local HR board, and I volunteer in my community. I spend my money here, I clean up after
my pets, and take care on our trails and our beaches. I lead a local hiking group, regularly introducing people to our beautiful
outdoors.
In my humble opinion, I am exactly the kind of citizen that the City of San Luis Obispo should want to retain.
I believe that a project like Avila Ranch would help me to make San Luis Obispo my forever home. Affordable home prices and
down payment assistance could take what seems like a pipe dream and make it a reality. Features like green spaces, bike trails
and small home sizes fits in perfectly with my lifestyle and brings so many benefits to our city as well. Traffic improvements,
such as that sometimes terrifying left turn onto Vachell Road, would just be the icing on the cake.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and to consider my thoughts.
I hope to be SLO's newest 'permanent' resident when this project breaks ground!
