Subject:San Luis Ranch Project
Dear Council Members:
I am writing to you to again voice my concerns regarding the San Luis Ranch Project. While I understand the need for
some more affordable housing in San Luis Obispo, I feel that this project coupled with the Avila Ranch Project are not
the best solutions to make this happen. I feel the negative impacts on the residents who already live here will likely
outweigh the potential for affordable homes for some of the people who would like to move here. I realize that many
may say it is easy to protest development when I already live here, but my family has made a lot of sacrifices to make
that happen, and we are one of the families, who have not been able to afford to purchase a home here, so I feel I
understand both sides of this dilemma.
San Luis Obispo is a relatively small community and that is one of its charms. Over-development with high density
housing will only burden our city with problems. I understand the draw to help people who would like to live here
afford homes, but at what cost to its residents? Do not sacrifice the very essence of San Luis Obispo that is such a draw
for people at the altar of development. I understand the need for housing for people who work here, but please try to
keep the integrity of the city. What about working with Cal Poly to cap enrollment to a ratio of on campus housing,
freeing up units in the city? How about offering a variety of housing with less high density to decrease the impact on
traffic, parks, and water resources?
I am fairly certain this is a done deal, but I hope you remember that there is a tipping point where San Luis Obispo will
no longer exist as the desirable home town community it is and become another city albeit with good weather and nice
views. The city won’t be able to ride on those qualities alone. It is the council’s job to steward the city for its current
residents. I hope you make a good choice for our city.
Melissa Angel
