Re:
Public
Comment
Dear
Chair
Brooks
&
Members
of
the
Bicycle
Advisory
Committee,
SLO
Transit,
the
City
of
San
Luis
Obispo’s
bus
service,
recently
began
implementation
of
their
Short
Range
Transit
Plan.
As
it
was
presented,
safety
issues
as
their
buses
drive
along
Pepper
St.
and
Phillips
Ln.
were
to
be
addressed.
Unfortunately,
as
of
right
now
&
for
reasons
that
can
be
better
explained
by
the
City’s
Transit
Manager,
Gamaliel
Anguiano,
these
issues
are
left
unaddressed.
Refer
to
the
videos
included
in
my
e-‐mail
for
an
illustration
of
the
situation.
Why
should
this
corner
be
of
concern
to
the
Bicycle
Advisory
Committee?
You
are
aware
of
the
plans
for
the
Railroad
Safety
Trail.
They
include
turning
Pepper
St,
including
the
stretch
currently
used
by
SLO
Transit,
into
a
Bike
Path.
Additionally,
a
bicycle
and
pedestrian
bridge
is
to
be
constructed
at
the
corner
of
Phillips
Lane
and
Pepper
St.
In
short,
the
bus
cannot
safely
maneuver
on
Phillips
Lane
or
Pepper
St.
without
crossing
double
yellow
lines,
thus
encroaching
in
oncoming
traffic.
This
is
an
issue
now,
without
the
additional
pedestrian
and
bicycle
traffic
that
the
expansion
of
the
Railroad
Safety
Trail
will
bring.
Mr.
Fukushima
assured
me
that
there
would
be
enough
room
for
the
bus
to
coexist
with
the
Railroad
Safety
Trail.
On
paper,
I’m
sure
this
is
true.
However,
I
remain
unconvinced
for
the
following
reason.
Pedestrians
and
cyclists
would
still
go
through
the
corner
shown
in
the
videos
to
access
the
trail.
Will
there
be
safe
access
to
the
Railroad
Safety
Trail
from
Phillips
Lane
with
the
bus
service
as
it
is?
The
wheels
of
local
government
turn
slowly.
Mr.
Anguiano
is
looking
at
alternatives
that
would
remove
bus
service
from
Phillips
Lane.
I
trust
that
he
and
his
staff
will
arrive
at
a
satisfactory
solution,
hopefully
sooner
than
later.
In
the
meantime,
I
believe
this
issue
to
be
one
that
the
Bicycle
Advisory
Committee
should
evaluate
and
follow
to
ensure
the
future
success
of
the
Railroad
Safety
Trail.
I
regret
that
I
am
unable
to
attend
the
scheduled
July
20th
meeting
of
the
Bicycle
Advisory
Committee
to
address
these
concerns
in
person.
However,
I
would
be
happy
to
meet
with
any
or
all
of
you
to
discuss
this
problem
at
a
future
date.
My
contact
information
is
included
in
the
heading
of
this
letter.
Sincerely,
Logan
Hunter
