Re: Avila Ranch and continuous Class II bike lanes on Buckley Road
Dear City Planning Commissioners:
I am a long-standing bicyclist. I rode my bicycle to work for over 30 years reducing air particulate
pollution and traffic congestion for others who were not as fortunate to use this form of transportation. Thus
it is imperative that there is continuing support for Class II bike lanes in conjunction with the Avila Ranch
Development Project proposed on 150 acres at 175 Venture Drive in San Luis Obispo.
While the developer has agreed to add Class II bike lanes from Buckley Road's extension to
Higuera Street to the eastern boundary of the project site, there is an approximate one -mile gap from the
project site to Thread Lane in the unincorporated area. There will be a mile long area of rode with no
shoulder and thus no room for bicyclists. This gap is an impediment for safe bicycle commuting especially
during morning and evening commutes. It also creates a problem for motorists who by law must give the
bicyclists a 3 -foot right of way when passing.
Any new development brings additional automobile traffic with associated parking problems and
decreased air quality. Providing an alternate means of safe transportation for bicyclists will help reduce this
congestion. Consistent Class II bike lanes on Buckley Road should be a priority for both the city and county
so bicyclists have a safe and convenient way to reach their destinations without fear of being hit by
motorists. It will also reduce rode rage by automobile drivers who believe any impediment to their driving is
unconstitutional.
Your consideration for correction of this potential problem is appreciated.
Sincerely
Paul Collins, MD
