In most instances, better site planning and architectural design would save these trees and their valuable habitats. Providing better EIR's and responding to the requirements of CEQA's would also provide better answers for our trees. Instead, we should, and you as members of the Tree Committee should make a new rule to NOT CUT ANY TREES DOWN. Our Governor, Jerry Brown, will be having a Climate Change Conference here in the STATE next year. I believe such as the rules we, SLO, made for NO Smoking,,, in restaurants and along streets, we should do the same about NOT CUTTING DOWN TREES. Afterall, "When it Comes to the Climate, Older Trees DO IT Better." We could start a program to save all trees as they are the ones that contribute the most oxygen and this, if done all over the country, would help USA to lower carbon all over our country and perhaps inspire other countries to do the same. I do believe it is worth a try. Better choices for the sites for these large housing projects would improve the situation for our trees. And more thoughtful designed site plans would work around the trees. I propose that you deny the removal of all of these trees on your agenda until your committee considers this proposal. Respectfully, Sandra Lakeman PS: I checked out the Ficus Tree that Rob Rossi declared was ruining the tile in the Fremont Theatre, and the tree is not even in front of the Theatre but towards the corner of the street in front of another business. This tree should not be removed as it is very beautiful and is not causing a problem. PSS: ANOTHER FICUS TREE is on Monterey in the curb area of the Matt Qualigino property and that tree should not be removed. Just because a developer wants to remove trees so as to maximize the rentable area in a new construction area is not a sufficient reason to take down a beautiful tree. He should provide a nice shaded area in front of his building for clients and inhabitants of the new structure. Let's think about <in total> the appearance of our streets and town and how much better a small cafe or a planted terrace would be for the apartment dwellers.
