Subject:1135 Santa Rosa
Dear City Council Members,
I've recently found out that the effort to retroactively force punitive changes to the redeveloped property at
1135 Santa Rosa are ongoing. I've previously written to the city council regarding my admiration for the new
property and the positive impact it makes on SLO downtown area. As mentioned in earlier communication,
the new building is a tremendous improvement over the old structure, both aesthetically and functionally.
What I find overwhelmingly worrisome is the notion that elected (and worse yet, non-elected) officials find
themselves at liberty to arbitrarily impose their opinions or the opinions of other SLO residents from a loud
minority, on businesses and citizens of the community. It is unacceptable that after all the proposals were
approved, permits issued, and inspections completed, the board feels it's justified to force changes not guided
by their own process, but rather by "complaints" from a few individuals.
Furthermore, this approach risks a worse outcome for everyone. The original plan for the building, as
reviewed and approved, created a wonderful structure as it sits today. Trying to apply disjointed architectural
"fixes" that have been proposed for the building will invariably create a bastardized version of the structure,
not at all guaranteeing improvement or satisfaction to the complaining entities.
Finally, think of it from a personal perspective, as I have. As a good citizen of SLO, if you were to rebuild your
own house, you'd go and get plans, permits, and approvals. And after you've spent the money and gotten a
pass on your final inspection, and you and your wife are enjoying lemonade in your new beautiful house, how
would you feel if someone came to your door and ordered you to make changes! Would you comply?!
Whether you are a private citizen or a business, right is right, and wrong is wrong! Stalwork did everything by
the book, it's time the council does the same!
Respectfully
Boris Axelrod
