HomeMy WebLinkAboutHousing (Nash) received 10-02-2017 RI~[ FIVII'll From: Betsey Nash < CITY OF SAN LUIS OSISPO Sent: Monday, October 02, 2017 3:51 PM To: E-mail Council Website; Davidson, Doug; Advisory Bodies OCT 0 2 2017 Subject: Why workforce & affordable housing matter to me COMMUNITY DL VFLOPM? W'1 As a human resources professional I know first hand what the limited pool of affordable housing means to us ness trying to hire workers. The cost of housing relative to wages has been out of whack for decades. Cal Poly parents and retirees moving from cities where they receive top dollar for larger homes are some of the causes for the low inventory of affordable homes. Governmental red tape & the slow pace in which projects are approved are also to blame. If we are to grow our tech industry we need to be able to hire the brightest minds from Poly & entice more from outside the area where they are promised much better wages. But the pool of talent is limited by our economy: much as candidates may love our wines & hikes & beaches; they gotta live. As for affordable housing: we need our minimum wage workers to live near their jobs, so family & environmental reasons. And our community is made stronger by having a diverse population, too: not all upper middle class whites. Betsey Nash, SPHR, SHRM-SCP NASH HR SERVICES 805.341.8178
