Dear SLO City Council: Heidi Harmon, Andy Pease, Aaron Gomez, Carlyn Christianson, and Dan Rivoire,
I am writing in reference to the potential extension of open space hours in our local community. From reading comments
it seems there is much fear mongering and ill informed positions justifying a ban on the use of our collective open space
during the night time hours, constricting our access significantly.
Where I do agree is in the idea that irresponsible use of open space should be punished and not allowed to continue,
however, the vast majority of individuals looking to utilize open space at night are those with jobs in our community that
can't participate during daylight hours during the week.
I would encourage you all to actually go out and experience nighttime outdoor recreation of some type before making a
decision. What you will find is that it opens up new elements to the experience and is no more dangerous when proper
precaution is taken such as the use of lights.
Open space access is one of the elements that originally drew myself and many others to this community and why I chose
to make this my home please help continue this freedom of access to the space we all hold dear. I feel confident that a
compromise, such as extended hours would lead to an ease of both sides of the argument here and ask that your best
judgement be made towards creating that type of solution rather than pure access or a complete ban.
Thank you,
Ian D. Ferguson
