Steinmaus < Sent:Wednesday, October To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Expanded hours for Open Space (Item 10 on the 10/17/17 City Council Agenda) Dear City Council Members, thanks you so much for your thoughtful plan to expand Open Space hours on Cerro San Luis for a 2 year pilot program to assess environmental impacts. I am a SLO resident who, like many, have a full time job that prevents me from getting out for my daily ride before 5 PM. Unfortunately, any reasonable ride time would put me in violation of the current law to be out of Open Space an hour after sunset. I am a very conscientious rider who respects the rights of other trail users and nocturnal wildlife as well as the privacy of those lucky enough to be able to live adjacent to Open Space trails. My group have frequently taken other routes if we are impinging on others or wildlife (e.g. rattlesnakes, skunks....even cows!). Being a plant biology professor specializing in managing invasive plants and weeds while minimizing impacts on natives, I care tremendously about the ecosystems represented within the Open Spaces. These spaces serve as laboratories for my classes. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to me that these ecosystems remain as undamaged as possible. Thank you again for considering a reasoned approach to this issue.
