Subject:after hours trail access
I am writing to support the pilot program to expand trail access after hours on Cerro San Luis.
I have been a resident of SLO city for nearly 20 years and the healthy atmosphere and open space is one of the main
reasons I choose to live here. I frequently enjoy (spending between 200-300 hours/year) all of our open spaces while
hiking or on a mountain bike. I also occasionally volunteer for trail maintenance days with the CCCMB, largely because
of the great attitude the city has for supporting mountain biking. I'm very pleased with the expansion of our open space
in the past decade and all of the new trails, these are wonderful low-cost investments that deliver long term enjoyment
and contribute to quality of life in SLO.
The pilot program seems like a very reasonable and conservative compromise that would create a minimal impact on
wildlife, which as I understand, wasn't really a primary reason for the after hours closure in the first place. The
commonly used trailhead at Marsh St. isn't within a neighborhood so the complaint of disruption to neighbors is
moot. It's impossible to get lost on this small hill and rescue access is easy, so the "added strain" on emergency
personnel isn't really a valid concern. The central location in town and the popularity of this open space also makes it a
great choice to allow the after dark access. This really seems like a no-brainer. Looking forward to taking a quick hike or
bike up the hill after work again.
