HomeMy WebLinkAboutGeneral Housing Observations, Cal Poly (White) received 07-26-2017Beruman, Katelin RECEIVED From: Linda White <lindaleewhiteI5@gmail.com> CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO Sent: Wednesday, July 26, 2017 11:50 AM To: E-mail Council Website; Advisory Bodies JUL 2 6 2017 Subject: General observations COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT I just arrived home from one month in the Arctic. Here are a few observations upon my return The first headline greeting me was, "Cal Poly hustles to make room for more students". It seems that CP made a "mistake" and have 1000 to 1200 more students this fall bringing enrollment to 22,500. OOPS!!! or is it? This is the mark that CP has been striving for while at the same time denying to the city and its residents. Now they tell us that they won't pursue any student growth until at least 2022. Can we believe this any more than their promise to not increase enrollment this year? I'm sure that another "mistake" can be conveniently fabricated. Where will the displaced Poly Canyon students live while this facility is used to house up to 8 freshmen in bunk beds? Could this be the reason that upon my return, I was inundated with notes, e-mails, requests, etc. from existing Poly students to rent my rentals??? They are offering "any rent" to get housing. Will you finally address the "Cal Poly elephant"? My second observation occurred in Reykjavik. They are going through a housing shortage due to increased tourism. A modern, glass, apartment box was built in the old section of town. I rather liked the style but it stuck out amongst the 1945+/- Icelandic homes. Rather than write letters to the Icelandic equivalent of City Council, ARC, etc., neighbors just break windows or write graffiti on the offending building. I love travel. It is so broadening. I will continue to update you on life around the world as I avoid living in SLO. Linda White
