COUNCIL COMPENSATION COMMITTEE

Proposed Questionnaire Inquiries
Submitted by Marcia Nelson
1.Should we come to a philosophical consensus regarding the "purpose" of paying CC? Are they
politicians or citizens sharing their talents and concerns to help SLO continue to be a vibrant
healthy town?
2.Is the money a "stipend"? In other words, distinct from a wage or salary because it is not
payment for work performed, instead, it is payment that allows one to be exempt partly or
wholly from a salaried position in order to take on a roll that is not normally paid? (Source:
Wikipedia)
3.Can we all agree that CC is under compensated now?
4.Should benefits be increased along with the stipend/pay? For example, an allowance that is
paid to cover assumed expenses (no documentation required)?
5.Should adjustments to monthly allowance be adjusted according to the CPI for urban
consumers? If so, how often?
6.Are there tax advantages to CC members if money received is categorized as an "allowance" or
"expense" reimbursement?
Submitted by Amy Kardel
1.Would you have been able to do a better job if you had been compensated?
2.Compensation at a full market salary is not possible. If you had to recommend

3.What problems do you foresee if there were to be greater compensation for council
members?
