Subject:re: hiking on Cerro San Luis Reserve, In favor of the pilot program
Dear Mayor and San Luis Obispo City Council Members,
I am writing you in support of the proposed pilot program for use of the Cerro San Luis Reserve
during non-daylight saving months. I have enjoyed hiking these hills of San Luis Obispo for nearly 20
years and the use of these open spaces is precious to me. As a full time worker I am unable to
access these beautiful spaces until nearly 5:30pm. I have been safely and respectfully using these
open spaces one or two evenings per week with several of my hiking friends.
I understand the need to protect these open spaces, mitigating impacts to wildlife and to be certain
that these public spaces are utilized in a safe manner.
I believe that can be accomplished and still allow access in the winter evenings.
This request has often been described as a request for "extended use" hours. I would like to reframe
that understanding.
This proposal would seem to me to be more accurately described as merely "maintaining" the same
number of use hours as would be allowed in summer months. Allowing hiking access in the
evenings until say 8pm, would not increase the number of hours used nor would it increase the typical
human impact over what is currently approved for nearly 8 months of the year.
I greatly appreciate the energy and attention that the city council members are devoting to this
matter. Thank you for your consideration.
Regards,
David Jensen, DVM
