HomeMy WebLinkAbout1/16/2018 Item 9, Shumard From:Tom Shumard < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Cerro San Luis Extended Hiking Pilot Program To the Mayor and City Council Members, My name is Tom Shumard. I am a long time resident of the city of San Luis Obispo. I strongly SUPPORT this pilot program that will allow extended hiking hours on Cerro San Luis. I began hiking Cerro San Luis in the early eighties as part of a conditioning program suggested by my doctor (also a long time resident). He urged me to join him for my first trip up the mountain. He showed me the way to the top and from then on it was a regular thing at least once a week. Now in my seventies, hiking Cerro San Luis has been a regular part of my health and fitness activities as well as a chance to walk and chat with friends and family over these many years. In all that time, no wildlife has been impacted, no home owners have been disturbed, and no rescues were needed. The biggest concern I've had is people cutting the trail in various locations and causing erosion. I've often tried to enlighten "trail cutters" as to the damage they cause. This problem obviously occurs day or night. Like so many of my friends, I work until 5pm and can't make it to the traihead on Cerro San Luis until between 5:30 and 5:45pm or later. This effectively eliminates hiking during the evening in the winter months. Please consider approving this pilot program. I believe it very likely that you and the nearby residents will find that it will benefit all parties. Thank you for your time, Tom Shumard 2356 Flora St. San Luis Obispo 1
