I read in The Tribune dated October 25, 2017 that the city council adopted an ordinance, "straws upon request," restricting
plastic straws in order to protect the environment. "Gomez said that plastic has infiltrated the diets of fish species and
created heaps of ocean garbage." “Right now we’re sacrificing the environment for convenience,” Gomez said. “This is
seriously costing the planet.”

CNN recently published this article online:

I applaud the city council for adopting this ordinance in order to protect wildlife and the environment.
A previous city council made protection of open space a high priority. In the city's general plan: "The primary purpose of
the Natural Reserves/Open Space is protection of natural resources including wildlife and their habitats." The city council
will be voting on January 16 to increase the night hours of mountain biking and public access on Cerro San Luis Natural
Reserve in a "pilot program," which may be applied to other Natural Reserves in the future. If this "pilot program" passes,
I agree with Aaron Gomez that in doing so, "we're sacrificing the environment for convenience."
You may remember previous letters I've written to you. I come from Southern Italian peasant stock. My parents would
use a dialect phrase “comedo mi.” A very loose translation is “I will do something inappropriate that is convenient to
me.” An example of this is, leaving your grocery cart in the parking lot. Another example is, night mountain biking/hiking
on San Luis Mountain Natural Reserve.
Molte Grazie,
Gracie Tedone Manderscheid
