HomeMy WebLinkAbout1/16/2018 Item 9, Evans From:Pete Evans < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Night time trails etc SLO City Council, You may have received some correspondence claiming that night time hikers never see any wildlife and that the trails are rarely used then. Similar comments about hikers not even seeing any critters during the day are also rummaging around the community. In the first case a hiker cannot see much in the dark, and wild critters will avoid us with a passion at all times anyway, so how in heck would a night time hiker even know about these things? With the noise and perhaps lighting hikers use all wildlife would be long gone, against their inclination to roam freely. During the day the critters, those not already hiding out because of their nocturnal habits, will be even more prone to avoid the species most responsible for their loss of habitat and safety, humans. So I feel the arguments listed above are not valid. According to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences: loss of wildlife is "biological annihilation". We should be doing all we can to preserve fragile reserves of wildlife and their habitat. Our personal fancies should come in a distant third to those goals.
