PLEASE PLACE IN AGENDA CORRESPONDENCE. Thank you.
Mayor and City Council,
I have been a resident of Mission Lane since 1974 and reside a short block from Broad Street. The
two proposed plans are abusive to the Anholm neighborhood. Having attended many of the
meetings I think that closing the Broad Street entrance and exit to highway 101 would reduce and
calm the lion's share of vehicle traffic in our neighborhood. Many vehicles use Broad from Foothill to
101 as a cut-through. They were able to close an entrance to 101 in Arroyo Grande and it stayed
closed for over a year. This needs to be tried first. Please don't say that CalTrans will not allow it until
the Highway 1/Santa Rosa entrance to 101 is improved. It would be a trial/pilot program.
I was surprised to receive your postcard survey sent to close neighbors of the proposed Broad Street
Bike Boulevard and only see two choices provided for us to select from; there needed to be a third
choice "Neither Option" "Leave As Is." Perhaps "Back to the drawing board, please." would have
been a wise option. Lincoln Street, is a much safer route that was not even offered. It is much wider
and does not have the many dangerous intersections that Broad and Chorro have.
The Anholm neighborhood is has construction projects happening that will severely impact traffic and
circulation on our narrow streets. Waiting until 22 Chorro, 71 Palomar and the proposed 78 unit
project at the former site of MacDonald's (and encompassing the corner of Chorro & Foothil)l are
completed will result in a more informed and better plan.
The Anholm neighborhood is a mix of seniors, disabled, students and families. Your plans to remove
parking are discriminatory against seniors (ageist), the disabled and families with young children, in
an already over-parked neighborhood. The proposed plans are poorly thought through and degrade
the livability of our neighborhood.
Have you considered simply lowering the speed limit on Broad and Chorro from 25 to 20 mph
accompanied by more enforcement for both vehicles and bicycles who often ignore the stop signs? It
seems like a logical, less costly step that could be tried and much less invasive on the quality of
residents' lives in our neighborhood.
Accidents have not been a problem between bicycles and vehicles in the Anholm area. One horrible
fatality last summer on Foothill was the fault of a drunk, underage driver from Los Osos; it was not
1
near/on the proposed bike boulevard; please don't attempt to use this terrible tragedy as an excuse
as has been done at prior public meetings.
Please stop diminishing the quality of life in our neighborhood and vote "No" on the plans before you.
Years ago the City installed ridiculous, costly "traffic calming" on Chorro and Broad and it was an
expensive bust. It cost two college students their lives on a rainy night when they hit a bulb-out and a
tree on Chorro and Mountain View before the City tore it all out on Chorro and lowered the speed
bumps on Broad. Just about a year ago the signs were painted on the streets on Broad and
Chorro bikes and cars are peacefully coexisting; there is not a problem. The City's proposed plans
will create a huge one for the residents and unsafe conditions for bicyclists as well.
