I am back from Cuba for a few days before leaving for Antarctica and will not be able to attend the City Council
meeting. I can't believe that the City is still pushing for this Broad/Chorro bike blvd. I have done a lot of
travelling, some in bike friendly countries and the idea there, is to separate the motorists from bikes and
pedestrians. Many times, the bikes run along rivers, streams, through forests, etc., similar to the Bob Jones trail.
When bikes are in the city proper, they use wide dedicated spaces separated by landscaped medians. Some even
have their own signals when crossing motorist roads.
Why not develop a landscaped pedestrian/bike boulevard along the railroad tracks, avoiding the motorists
except for crossings? The proposed $3million dollar project just doesn't fit SLO and certainly NOT Broad and
Chorro.
I am attaching a 1973 photo of me (on Buchon St) running errands long before bicyclists were popular or
organized. I am not against bicyclists but at 70 years-old, you will not be getting me on a bike to do errands. I
can't imagine me riding my bicycle while balancing 20 rolls of toilet paper from Costco on my head.
Please reconsider.
