Subject:Re: Public Hearing Item #12: Broad Street Bicycle Boulevard (Anholm Bikeway) Plan
To reinforce a key point Richard made on Congalton last week. The present (and maybe most) plans will
create an unsafe situation just outside many driveways along the routes in the plan. Can you imagine
someone backing out of their driveway while crossing a major bike route with many bikers not taking
care? Many do not. Could be a driver will (legally) force a bike to swerve out into traffic to avoid a
collision. And what about those who are aging a bit, and cannot turn their head as they could when young?
A fast moving bike could enter their zone in a couple of milliseconds.
The next day I was walking towards Linnaea's Cafe. Approaching Marsh on Garden I was overtaken by
two bicyclists, a dad and toddler on a small bike with helper wheels. They both ran the stop sign at
Marsh. This is the reality of biking, many do not follow the signs or rules of navigation. Personally I am
not all wigged out by this situation though I have sometimes been almost run over by fast bikes, but it is
what it is. If the plans do not reflect reality (and that seems to be evident by the overwhelming
evidence against them) then they should be scrapped. We do not live in a perfect world and must account
for that in our planning.
I wanted to share this in case anyone wants to mention it to the council for their consideration.
Too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.

Is it possible that they trash the whole idea? How many new cyclists do they project for our $1m? SLO high has great
bike approaches and yet only gets 100 bike trips a day. That’s about 6-7%.
Personally I ride my bike for 75% of my trips. I have no problem with the current situation and would rather the money
were used for other improvements.
Good scholarship on the figures, Allan. Indeed let’s hope that this was just sloppy work on part of staff.

Dear Daryl, Jake and Luke -
I am forwarding you via the below attachment my
critique of staff's "Preferred Alternative" for the
Anholm Bikeway. I am recommending an
alternative route. I am also forwarding this letter
to the City Council prior to their February 6, 2018
6:00 P.M. meeting. I thank you for your due
diligence in this matter.
