Subject:City Council Meeting 2/6/18 Item #12
Dear Mayor and Council members,
We want to lessen the vehicular traffic on Chorro and Broad; therefore, making it safer for bicyclists, pedestrians and
cars.
In the Anholm neighborhood we have a stretch of roads that need very little change to make them safe, and already
they already have less traffic. The addition to an informal bike path on Lincoln to West would solve so many safety
issues that the Chorro and Broad Bike Track have.
Will bicyclists still use Chorro? Yes, even if there is a Bike Track, because the Bike Track is unsafe. The Bike Track is too
narrow. It abuts many driveway aprons. The Bike Track goes over sewer drain grates. Bicyclists will have to stop at stop
signs on Chorro and Broad, therefore slowing their progress. If a bicyclist wants speed then they will use the street.
Lincoln to West Street solves all of these issues. What about the hill on Chorro? Bicyclists going north who cannot
maneuver the hill can cut across to Chorro from Mission onto Broad. Where road sharing is working.
Why start in this neighborhood? If we had the 101 overpass pedestrian/bike bridge, then maybe it would make sense.
But the 101 on and off ramps are still open. The streets remain the same width. People still need their cars. So, the
pedestrian/bike bridge is to navigate the slight grade on Chorro past the 101 over-pass.
The safest part of this whole bike path in this neighborhood is something that doesn't exist. And that is the very
expensive pedestrian/bike 101 over-pass. And that can't exist while the 101 on and off ramps are still open.
Spend the money we don't have to finish the Railroad Safety Trail. Spend the money we don't have to educate cyclists
and car drivers that we don't pass each other on a road that have double yellow lines. Educate drivers that they need to
stop behind the white line at stop signs and not three feet past. Educate people to wear clothing at night so they can be
seen. Spend money on repairs and extensions of sidewalks on Chorro and Broad. Get rid of utility poles that narrow
sidewalks. Add better lighting to these streets.
It is never too late to change your mind, given the information that has been brought to our attentions with Richard
Schmidt's information and plain old hard common sense.
We have a safe alternative already. It is Lincoln to West. We have road sharing, it's working.
I am going to try to be there Tuesday night, but I have the care of my 90 year old Father. His safety is my responsibility,
as yours is the safety of all who use our streets in San Luis Obispo.
Thank you for your time,
Nancy T. PIckering of .Anholm District
